Named after the former City of Lafayette, which became part of New Orleans in 1852, it was the city's first planned cemetery. Known for its architecturally significant tombs and mausoleums, often housing multiple family members, the cemetery features a cruciform layout designed for funeral processions. Spanning a single city block, it holds around 1,100 family tombs and approximately 7,000 individuals.
